The town of Kolar Gold Fields had some of the world’s deepest mine
shafts but these are now uneconomical. Unemployment among the thousands
of low caste former mining families is very high. Many of these
‘outcaste’ children were the victims of prejudice and bullying.
The girls, in particular, were discouraged from learning and training.
Local Christians
oversee an ‘Educational Assistance Programme’ giving educational
support and Christian nurture for girls.
Girls are also
trained in simple skills including dress making and typing and are
given regular medical checks by local health workers.
